Class Descriptions

Centreville Dance Academy offers classes in two sessions: school and summer. Our school session begins in September and ends in June with a recital at Osbourne Park High School. Our summer session runs for four weeks during the month of July. Some classes are only available during the school session; please see class description for details.


Level Classes:

Level classes are available for students age 7 – 18 years of age starting at Level 1 through Level 11. These classes were developed for the more serious dancer seeking a progressive curriculum. Director or instructor approval is needed for registering for these classes. Placement is based first on a student's ability to retain and execute the required skills for each level and then on age. A student's ability to progress through each level successfully is based on attendance, as well as the ability to retain and comprehend technical terms.

Ballet Levels A - K

Description:
Students will learn classical ballet techniques and terminology. Each class includes barre exercises, center floor work, and across-the-floor combinations. The ballet curriculum is based on a combination of the French, Vagonova and Cecchetti methods as students progress through each level curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate.

Begining Pointe I / Advanced Pointe

Description:
Begining pointe class is included as part of ballet level I classes. Students can take the class on flat or in pointe shoes at the instructors discrection. Advanced Pointe is offered as a seperate class. Pointe class is designed for intermediate to advanced students with previous ballet training. Students will utilize previously learned ballet technique while working in pointe shoes. Each class includes barre exercises, center floor work and across the floor combinations. These exercises focus on strengthening the feet and ankles.

Lyrical Levels C - K

Description:
Lyrical class is designed for intermediate to advanced students with previous training in ballet. Students will explore partnering and weight sharing exercises combined with basic techniques and skills from ballet, jazz and modern. It emphasizes interpretation of music lyrics while telling a story with movement that can be fluid or abstract. As students progress through each level curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate. Students must take this class in conjunction with ballet.

Jazz Levels 1-11

Description:
Jazz class will focus on learning proper dance technique such as isolations of the body, improving performance quality and developing complex rhythms and patterns. Students will be exposed to various styles of jazz such as Broadway, Street and Contemporary to help develop a well rounded dancer. Class curriculum is based on ballet technique layered with traditional jazz movement and includes a proper warm-up, stretches, isolations, across-the-floor progressions, and combinations. As students progress through each level curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate.

Tap Levels 1-11

Description:
Tap classes are designed to develop rhythm, style and sound. Students will learn a variety of tap styles from Broadway to Rhythm tap. Exercises focus on building flexibility of the knee and ankles, coordination, and speed of movement. The class emphasis is on developing proper tap technique, producing clear tap sounds, and having fun. As students progress through each level curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate.

Rhythm Force

Description:
Rhythm Force is a concept class fusing an eclectic system of martial arts with traditional notions of dance and rhythm. Elements of this pairing come together to enhance both strength, flexibility, and grace. This new concept of incorporating a total curiculm of motivational martial arts to music will enable students to learn an ancient art form which instills confidence, concentration, discipline, and strength in a whole new way. Music choices in this dance - martial arts fusion class range from classical to hip-hop. CDA welcomes Mr. Ibby Abdalla (Mr. A) a world martial arts champion and accomplished martial arts instructor to the CDA family.

Hip Hop Levels 1-5

Description:
Hip hop is a high-energy class that infuses the latest styles of street dancing, breaking, popping, and locking. Classes will encourage students to step outside of the box by bringing their own individual style and personality to the movements. Hip hop dance requires students to have the strength and stamina to successfully perform moves. Therefore class includes upper and lower body conditioning as well as a rigorous warm-up to help prepare students for more intense movements.
