Class Descriptions
Centreville Dance Academy offers classes in two sessions: school and summer. Our school session begins in September and ends in June with a recital at Osbourne Park High School. Our summer session runs for five weeks during the months of July and August. Some classes are only available during the school session; please see class description for details.

Combination Classes:
Combination classes are a great way for students to experience different types of dance in a one-hour instructional time. Classes are available for students 2½ through 10 yrs old. The main focus of combination classes is on students having fun and enjoying dance as an everyday activity. Class placement is based on age as well as a student's ability to learn.
- 2½ Creative Dance
- Ages: 2½ years old turning 3
- Class Time: 45 Minutes
- This class is designed for our youngest dancers who want to express their independence without the assistance of mom or dad. Dancers will have fun learning pre-ballet movement to popular children's music through singing and movement games. Props such as pom pons, hula hoops, parachutes and bean bags are used to enhance the learning experience. Class sizes are kept very small to assure plenty of individual attention for our youngest dancers.
- 3's Ballet/Tap
- Ages: 3 years old turning 4
- Class Time: 1 Hour
- This popular combination class is designed for students to express their individuality through the art of dance. The 3's ballet/tap class introduces young students to ballet, tap, and basic tumbling skills through imagination activities, movement games and singing. Students will have fun learning dance along with the use of props such as pom pons, hula hoops, parachutes and bean bags.
- 4's Ballet/Tap
- Ages: 4 years old turning 5
- Class Time: 1 Hour
- Students will continue to enjoy expressing themselves through the art of dance in this fun and interactive class. This class is built on the basic movements learned in the 3's Ballet/Tap combination class but is still appropriate for the first-time dancer. At this level, students will learn more challenging tap and ballet skills through imagination activities, movement games and singing. Dancers will enjoy learning basic ballet and tap terminology along with fun and engaging games.
- 5's Ballet/Tap/Jazz
- Ages: 5 years old turning 6
- Class Time: 1 Hour
- Dancers will enjoy this interactive class that builds on basic movements learned in the 4's Ballet/Tap combination class but is still appropriate for first-time dancers. Jazz class includes an introduction to proper warm-ups and stretches for the body combined with across-the-floor progressions and mini combinations. The Tap portion of the class will concentrate on building confidence through mastering more difficult patterns and steps. The Ballet portion of class includes an introduction to the ballet barre and learning more challenging steps.
- 5-6's Combo III
- Ages: 5-6 years old turning 6-7
- Class Time: 1½ Hours
- Combo III is a 1½ hour class that focuses on ballet, tap and jazz technique equally. Students will enjoy learning dance through a personal individualized approach to help students grasp concepts and techniques more easily. The ballet portion of class will focus on basic ballet technique and terminology. The jazz and tap portion of the class will focus on students learning proper warm-ups, techniques and stretches combined with across-the floor progressions and mini combinations.
- 6's Ballet/Tap/Jazz
- Ages: 6 years old turning 7
- Class Time: 1 Hour
- The 6's Ballet/Tap/Jazz class focuses on getting students ready to transition from combination type classes to full hour classes in a specific style of dance. Ballet class will include more challenging barre exercises while emphasizing basic terminology. The tap portion of the class will concentrate on developing intricate patterns and rhythms, while the jazz portion of class will begin to develop student's flexibility and balance skills.
- Jazz/Hip Hop
- Ages: 6 to 8 years old
- Class Time: 1 Hour
- The hip hop/jazz combination is a new concept that infuses the funky style of hip hop with the technical side of jazz. Students will learn the fundamentals of each style such as isolations and flexibility. This class will encourage students to dance outside of the box and bring their own personality to each movement. We pride ourselves on being a family oriented dance studio and go out of our way to find clean age-appropriate music.
- Teen Jazz
- Ages: 12 to 18 years old
- Class Time: 1 Hour
- This class is designed for students who are looking to have fun and enjoy jazz class as an everyday activity. Students will learn beginner to intermediate jazz movements with emphasis on learning proper jazz technique and terminology. They will explore the world of jazz through various styles such as Broadway and Street. This is a great alternative to our level classes, as the focus of this class is fun. Students who wish to progress to higher level jazz classes for more of a challenge should attend the level classes.
- Dance Team Preperation
- Class Time: 1 Hour
- Dance Team Prep class is designed for students ages 12 and up. Students will learn pom, jazz and hip-hop technique associated with the dance team style. The class will concentrate on building students strength and flexibility in-order to get them prepared for a high school dance team tryout. It is strongly suggested that students also take a ballet or jazz class to help them grasp technique and concepts more quickly. Attendance in this class or any other dance class does not guarantee placement on any high school dance team.
Level Classes:
Level classes are available for students age 7 -18 yrs of age starting at Level 1 through Level 10. These classes were developed for the more serious dancer seeking a progressive curriculum. Director or instructor approval is needed for registering for these classes. Placement is based first on a student's ability to retain and execute the required skills for each level and then on age. A student's ability to progress through each level successfully is based on attendance, as well as the ability to retain and comprehend technical terms.
- Ballet Levels A-H
- Class Time: 1 - 2½ Hours
- Students will learn classical ballet techniques and terminology. Each class includes barre exercises, center floor work, and across-the-floor combinations. The ballet curriculum is based on a combination of the French, Vagonova and Cecchetti methods as students progress through each level curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate.
- Lyrical Levels C-H
- Class Time: 1 Hour
- Lyrical class is designed for intermediate to advanced students with previous training in ballet. Students will explore partnering and weight sharing exercises combined with basic techniques and skills from ballet, jazz and modern. It emphasizes interpretation of music lyrics while telling a story with movement that can be fluid or abstract. As students progress through each level curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate. Students must take this class in conjunction with ballet.
- Pointe
- Class Time: ½ - ¾ Hour
- Pointe class is designed for intermediate to advanced students with previous ballet training. Instructor placement is required for this class. Students will utilize previously learned ballet technique while working in pointe shoes. Each class includes barre exercises, center floor work and across the floor combinations. These exercises focus on strengthening the feet and ankles. Students must take this class in conjunction with ballet.
- Jazz/Pom 1 - 3
- Ages: 6 to 11 years old
- Class Time: 1 Hour
- Jazz/Pom is a combination class that focuses on sharp cheer motions in combination with traditional jazz moves. This class focuses on students learning technical jazz moves such as kicks, turns and leaps while using pom poms for added visual effects. This class is great for students who are thinking about trying out for a middle school or high school dance team in the future. As students progress through each level, the curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate while building on previously learned techniques.
- Beginning Jazz
- Class Time: 1 Hour
- This class is designed for students who have had no previous jazz dance experience. Students will learn the necessary skills to help them progress through to higher levels of classes. Class will focus on learning proper jazz technique and terminology through basic dance movements.
- Jazz Levels 1-10
- Class Time: 1 Hour
- Jazz class will focus on learning proper dance technique such as isolations of the body, improving performance quality and developing complex rhythms and patterns. Students will be exposed to various styles of jazz such as Broadway, Street and Contemporary to help develop a well rounded dancer. Class curriculum is based on ballet technique layered with traditional jazz movement and includes a proper warm-up, stretches, isolations, across-the-floor progressions, and combinations. As students progress through each level curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate.
- Beginning Tap
- Class Time: 1 Hour
- In this class students are introduced to the basic elements of tap dance technique and terminology. Emphasis is placed on the importance of rhythm and clear sounds. Students will learn a variety of exercises and combinations to help them progress through to higher levels.
- Tap Levels 1-10
- Class Time: 1 Hour
- Tap classes are designed to develop rhythm, style and sound. Students will learn a variety of tap styles from Broadway to Rhythm tap. Exercises focus on building flexibility of the knee and ankles, coordination, and speed of movement. The class emphasis is on developing proper tap technique, producing clear tap sounds, and having fun. As students progress through each level curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate.
- Hip Hop Levels 1-5
- Class Time: 1 Hour
- Hip hop is a high-energy class that infuses the latest styles of street dancing, breaking, popping, and locking. Classes will encourage students to step outside of the box by bringing their own individual style and personality to the movements. Hip hop dance requires students to have the strength and stamina to successfully perform moves. Therefore class includes upper and lower body conditioning as well as a rigorous warm-up to help prepare students for more intense movements.
